Our Programs

City of South Gate CEHAT is currently focused on air quality issues in the City of South Gate. To increase awareness of both indoor & outdoor air quality the following initiatives are in place.

No Idling Campaign

South Gate CEHAT is working with California Air Resource Board (CARB) and the City of South Gate in stopping unnecessary idling of heavy-duty commercial vehicles to help improve air quality.

Goals of Campaign:

  • Educate the community about Idling

  • Encourage the community to report idling violations

  • Identification of idling hot spots

  • “No Idling” sign posting

Flag Program

South Gate CEHAT is working with various schools in the community and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to notify people about the outdoor air quality conditions by using brightly covered flags based on EPA's Air Quality Index.

Goals of Program:

  • Educate school staff, parents & students on Air Quality classifications

  • Educate school staff, parents & students on modifications for outdoor activities when air quality classifications are poor

  • Provide training for school staff and students on Flag Program protocol

Indoor Air Quality

South Gate CEHAT is working with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to provide educational workshops on how to reduce your exposure to contaminants at home.

Goals of Workshops:

  • Learn how these contaminants affect your health

  • Learn what you can do to reduce your exposure at home and save money at the same time

Low-cost Air Monitoring Sensors

The South Gate Community Environmental Action Team (CEHAT) and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) are collaborating on a project where SCAQMD provided the community of South Gate with air quality sensors to gain a better and more accurate understanding of air quality in South Gate neighborhoods. The sensors have been distributed to residents throughout the community to collect data on particulate matter (PM 2.5), ozone, and other air pollutants. Sensors are mounted outdoors and require a wireless internet connection. The local-scale data produced by these sensors are available online. Check out Purple Air's map below to see the real-time data!

Goals of Project:

  • Educate the South Gate community with the knowledge necessary to appropriately select, use, and maintain “low-cost” sensors and to correctly interpret sensor data
